Incredible read Peter! How much longer will it take for these thoughts of yours to be reality. “The graded K-12 schools will gradually disappear, replaced by age-mixed learning centers supporting Self-Directed Education”.
It seems impossible that K-12 can be morphed as you suggest, but the country demands it. If you are familiar with John Campbell’s Hero’s journey, as human beings wanting something different for their children, we have been called to the adventure. But like anything in life there are dragons at the gate feverishly working to keep the Hero’s out and the status quo in place.
The hubris surrounding the Titanic is “Similar to that in Education”. They never believed the Titanic could sink. Right up until it did.
In a recent Twitter Feed was this quote by Simon Mikhailovich. “I visited the U.S.S.R. in 1988 and neither I nor anyone else had any idea that within three years that country would blow up. Everyone knew the system didn’t work but the implications were thought inconceivable”.
Why can’t there be a radical revolution in K-12 systems in the way learning happens? Why are they prevented from being age-mixed learning centers supporting Self-Directed Education? If this were to take place, the destructive process of sorting, comparing, measuring and labeling children would surely meet its’ demise as a worn out system of thought. The creativity of human beings would be set free to shine.
