How To Perform On A Stage Made Up Of Nothing

On The Path to Self-Awareness

I bought a book for my oldest son. Something he shared had interested him. It came in a week because the lovers of Amazon no longer get our two-day prime shipping. Harrison already had gotten the audible version and was half way through.

A Book About Nothing

“Mom” he says, “have you read Spiritual Enlightenment, The Damnedest Thing, by Jed McKenna. In the book he explains that we are all performing on a stage. Our egos are made up and we are really “nothing” acting on a stage that we feel means everything. But we are no thing”.

I said oh, “tell me more about what nothing is”.

He said, “Mom so you know what nothing is? You tell me your version of nothing. I am feeling like I may not like that I am nothing”.

Then he walked away back into his makeshift office located in the front corner of the house.

I have had the surreal opportunity to spend time around my oldest son, 25 due to Coronavirus. I never considered the serendipity of the deep conversations in our daily talks. This last one took me by surprise.

Feeling Uncertain

Are you in a place in life where you are experiencing something similar. Out of nowhere these days arise the big questions around the meaning of life.

Uncertainty is in the air. Our place in future events and how they will take place is unknown. Not only for my son, but if you are willing to notice, in every persons eyes you look into.

In the moment Harrison asked me if I knew what “nothing” meant my mind raced over the years.

I have been on a journey to make sense of the human experience. To discover what is happiness. What brings equanimity.

Stuck in Patterns of Your own Making

Yet on the flip side I often waste precious time stuck in patterns of performing at all costs. Feeling pressured to show up “right” on the stage of life. Not slowing down to feel anything.

Why do we do that? Why do we choose to shut out our curiosity around a deeper meaning in life and keep on moving instead?

The answer I finally surrendered too is this motion keeps you safe. While the denial of your patterns may serve to lock out unwanted pain. Repeated conflict prevents you from reaching real connection in your profession and relationships.

So this slowing down during Corona has brought a new awakening of sorts. A fresh breath of new possibilities intertwined with Harrison being home. A compelling story around self-awareness re-emerging in our lives. The freedom and impact of seeing this no thing for what it is.

When “nothing” is realized to be everything a unique path to possibility and fulfillment opens. You begin to feel grateful for the beauty and creativity that surrounds you. Life takes a quantum leap in meaning.

On The Path To Nothing

In 2008, Oprah did a live series with Eckhart Tolle on his book, New Earth.

One of my biggest takeaways was that the person you see yourself as is no thing. This identification of your self as something is an illusion. Yet you spend a lifetime accumulating things to prove the value of this “nothing”.

“Many people don’t realize until they are on their deathbed and everything external falls away that no thing ever had anything to do with who they are. …The ego’s sense of self-worth is in most cases bound up with the worth you have in the eye of others”. — Eckhart Tolle

How To Break Free

During Coronavirus I aim to drop the story I hang on to on the stage of performance. Instead I want to trust the process to see no thing and deepen what it means to live now. To make art and connect with others in a way that transforms them to be open to new possibilities.
