What is it about certain humans that have put themselves out there in a way that leaves you inspired? What draws you in?
Why do you feel like a part of them lives on in you when they are gone?
Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna’s tragic death rocked our home. Kobe has been a staple in our love of basketball. First wearing the number 8 and then 24.
The jerseys changed but our curiosity for Kobe’s display of basketball prowess did not. Kobe left his “Mamba Mentality” as a legacy to each of us. He asserted for any challenge in life
“just try to get a little bit better every day”.
Light Up The World
I am reminded of the night Steve Jobs died. A rainy stormy night at the Detroit Tigers baseball field in Michigan. The hour ride home after filled with instagrams of Jobs. Grief poured out from fans across the globe waving their I-phone lights in reverence.
These bigger than life stories enlighten us. They provide hope that you can reach some pinnacle of life that works for you. They tell us time is short.
The full out way Kobe and Steve lived also signals life is full of challenges. Steve and Kobe left a trail of how they made it through. We want that too.
Connect The Dots Looking Backwards
Neither Steve nor Kobe connected the dots going forward. Steve shared this wisdom to Stanford University students in the 2005. He asserted,
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them going backwards. So you have to trust that your dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something-Your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down and it has made all the difference in my life”
The dots represent a look back in all our lives. The path chosen for fulfillment, not simply success.
Life Is A Game Of Connectedness
Kobe and Steve invited us into life’s game. To excel. To be curious. To step past the nay-sayers and bring something to life only you can imagine. To push through fear and self-doubt and create your own path for success.
Kobe’s Jersey numbers 8 and 24. Young Gianna with so much promise. The I-phone now on its eleventh rendition. Their stories touch and motivate us.
I am reminded of a nostalgic song that Coca Cola used as an advertisement in the 1970's. “I Want to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony)”. That’s what Kobe and Steve meant too. They had a love of what they were creating that made them feel a deep connectedness to life.
Create Your Dream
What creative project that you want to give the world have you been putting off? What’s been holding you back?
What impact do you dream of making? How can you make one connection at a time, everyday. Allowing people the space to believe in themselves.
You don’t have to reach the level of Steve Job’s contribution. You can make a small choice to reach an audience that may want to hear. You can align with Steve’s message,
“How can I make life better for people”?
You can choose to embrace the Mamba Mentality Kobe left behind to
“get a little bit better everyday”.
Make The Leap - Commit To The Work
I like what author and entrepreneur Seth Godin wrote in his blog last week.
“Find your footing and do your work. It’s a choice”.
I wonder what Seth would title his own “Mamba Mentality”.
I am curious what name you would give your own?
Make a Commitment
Decide what contribution you want to be. Make a commitment to find clarity in the direction that dream and motivation will take you.
For any journey you are on you are unsure how the dots will connect.
Commitment changes everything.
