Ed Newman It’s been a few years since I read Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy but what struck me was the ending.
After all he had worked through and accomplished he was till angry as hell.
This is the root of the psychological issues facing america. To remain pissed off at the world and believe you don’t deserve how you feel.
I wish I could solve the poverty issues. You may not be able to solve them by physically providing for the poor, yet it is possible to transform their mindset!
I think Marlane Ainsworth said it best when she offered her thoughts on Heminway’s message in Old Man and the Sea. “Heminway is warning me that my personal goals, once achieved, won’t bring me unalloyed happpiness.
That’s worth repeating, “Hemingway is warning me that my personal goals, once achieved, won’t bring me unalloyed happiness”.-Marlane Ainsworth
Vance should be commended for his outward accomplishments but the inner work is where life begins to take on a freshness!
Inner work, not analyzing your life, but seeing through your thoughts, is true freedom. This is available for any level of net worth. I stick to that!
